Safety at the Dock

There are a lot of danger zones around loading docks and dock doors.  Injuries at the loading dock can range from ergonomic to catastrophic.   Four ways to improve dock safety are:

Proper Vehicle Restraint  The most common cause of a dock catastrophe is a truck pulling away when a forklift has been half-in and half-out.  For that reason, vehicle-restraining systems can be installed.  When selecting the best system for an application, consider the types of trucks and the type of loading and unloading that is conducted at your facility.

Dock Leveler Use  The area between the dock and the trailer openings need to be considered for safety.  A dock-leveling device can be used to compensate for the gap between the dock and the trailer.  It can also compensate for the height difference between the floor and the trailer.   Because mechanical dock levelers can lead to potential ergonomic challenges for the operators, it is recommended that a powered, push button operated dock leveler, either air- or hydraulic-powered, be used.

Dock Doors, Seals, and Curtains  Seals at the top, bottom and sides of the panels prevent water from entering the openings and causing slippery conditions on the floor.

Proper Inspection and Maintenance  Regular and consistent inspection and maintenance program for all equipment located at the dock is recommended.   The Loading Dock Equipment Manufacturers (LODEM) Organization has developed the standards to cover the safety, performance, and testing of each device.
